The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning by Max Charming Chapter 1279
Margaret glanced over and, to her surprise, saw a little kid coming down the stairs. She was startled by the sight of him standing up along the railing. She exclaimed, “Oh my! Little rascal, what are you up to? Weren’t you playing with toy planes? When did you come down? If anything happens, how would I explain to Mr. Jardin and Ms. Jent?”
Kai looked at the child and noticed he was also looking at him with clear eyes. However, he could tell at a glance that this child was far from simple. Despite being so young, there was mischief in those little eyes.
Just then, Dalton held a photo and babbled unclear words to Kai. Margaret had been with him for a while and understood his temperament. Seeing this behavior, she knew something was up and brought Dalton to Kai. She said, “Dalton seems to like you. We rarely have outsiders at home, so seeing you is a novelty for him. Dalton, this is your uncle. Say ‘uncle’.”
Kai raised his eyebrow and asked, “He can talk now?”
Margaret proudly exclaimed, “Oh my! This kid is like a prodigy. He’s incredibly smart. Whatever I teach him, he learns in no time. It’s just that he’s still young.”
Kai said without hiding anything, “I can see he’s got a lot on his mind even though he’s young.”
Dalton extended his hands, making baby sounds, wanting Kai to hold him. Margaret remarked, “This child rarely lets anyone pick him up. Except for me, he usually doesn’t let anyone get close.”
Kai reached out and held Dalton. “Let’s talk upstairs.”
In the room, Kai took the photo from Dalton’s hands, and all he saw was Madelyn. He asked, “Miss your mom?”
Dalton nodded with drool dripping. “Ee.
Kai reassuringly said, “Your mom is far away right now and won’t be back for a while. You have to wait for your dad to return, and your mom will tag along, too. You’re becoming more and more like that rascal Zach now that you’re growing up. If it weren’t for knowing that he adopted you, I might have thought you were his illegitimate child born from some affair outside.”
Margaret clapped her hands. “Isn’t it? Dalton will be going to kindergarten in a year or two, and Mr. Jardin and Ms. Jent left without a definite plan. We don’t know when they’ll be back. Dr. Stewart, what’s going on?”
Kai said, “It’s not a big deal. Maddie didn’t want to stay here, so I sent her away. Zach got a minor injury, but he’s probably waking up soon. I just received a message that someone intends harm toward you all. Pack your things, and I’ll secretly take you away later.”
Margaret immediately refused. “N-No. Mr. Jardin told me long ago not to leave here no matter what the reason is.” As she spoke, she cautiously held the child over.
Kai squinted his eyes and asked, “When did he tell you, and what else did he say?
Margaret was at a loss of words.
