The Rewritten Love: A Second Beginning by Max Charming Chapter 1020

Zach said, “Tomorrow, I’ll have someone install some extra lights near the front door. By the way, we’ve just developed a new device at the company that allows your phone to receive identity recognition alerts if anyone enters when I’m not home.”

‘It’s not about preventing thieves but rather guarding against me trying to leave. He’s just trying to make it all sound fancy,’ Madelyn thought.

The person hiding in the shadows stood downstairs, watching as the lights in the house gradually dimmed. Their gaze slowly turned icy, filled with sadness and resentment.

Time passed, and the only light came from the faint moonlight, obscured by thick clouds, making the air heavy. Suddenly, a drizzle started to fall from the sky. It permeated the person’s body, transforming the coldness into a pain that swept through their entire being.

At four in the morning, the rain intensified. A loud thunderclap echoed, accompanied by the cries from the nursery next door. Madelyn turned over and gave a kick to Zach next to her under the covers. “Zach, go check on Dal. He’s crying again.”

Zach was resting with his arm over his eyes as the kick woke him up. Taking a deep breath, he took a moment before reaching over to turn on the light. Zach lifted the blanket and put on the pajamas beside him when out of bed. Before leaving, he made sure to tuck her in properly.

When Zach went to the next-door nursery to comfort Dalton, the crying was piercing. Unable to shake off her concern, Madelyn hurried over. If the crying kept up, it would be dawn soon. Every time it thundered and rained, Dalton cried nonstop.

Madelyn walked over and said, “Let me handle it. When are you planning to renovate the house? The soundproofing is terrible. There’s often heavy rain and thunder these days, and Dal keeps getting woken up and starts crying. Things can’t keep going on like this.”

Zach replied, “Got it. I’ll have Kevin come over tomorrow to take a look. I’m going to have a smoke.”

Dalton lay in Madelyn’s arms, and his crying gradually subsided. Listening to the rain tapering off, she went to open the curtains and then cracked the window for some fresh air. Seeing Dalton shedding tears, Madelyn playfully poked his nose. “Look at you, such a timid boy.”

“Ma… Ma…”

Madelyn pulled her mouth into a wry smile. ‘If only you were really my baby. But I’m not your mom, and you’re not my child.’

The leaves rustled. Suddenly, Madelyn spotted a figure emerging from the shadows downstairs. She glanced over and immediately let out a piercing scream, “Ah! There’s a ghost! Zach! Come quickly!”

Zach, who had just come back, strode into the room and embraced the flustered Madelyn. “What’s wrong?”

Madelyn was so frightened and pointed to a place downstairs. “I saw it. There was a woman with burns all over her body. I couldn’t see her face clearly. Quickly, have someone check downstairs.”

Destiny marked tonight as an uneasy night. Now, not only did Zach have to comfort the child, but he also had to soothe Madelyn. Down in the living room, he whipped up a bowl of pasta. After turning off the stove, he took off his pink apron, brought the bowl to her, and said, “Have something to eat.”

Madelyn sat on the couch, holding her head. “Now, every time I close my eyes, all I see is that person with burns all over her body. Zach, what have you been up to? She’s even gotten into the house. If she shows up again, what am I supposed to do?”

He responded, “There won’t be a next time. If you’re worried, come to work with me tomorrow. That way, there’s no need to be scared, right?”

The bodyguard who went out for a thorough search braved the rain as he walked in. “Mr. Jardin, we did find footprints outside. However, it seems like she has already fled.”

Madelyn Jent died on her wedding anniversary. She had been married to Zach Jardin for eight years, compromising for the better part of her life. However, she ended up being kicked out of the house. After the painful divorce, Madelyn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite her deteriorating health, she clung to life in the hospital, hoping that Zach would visit her one last time. As Valentine's Day arrived, heavy snow fell outside. Yet, Zach failed to make an appearance, leaving Madelyn with a deep sense of regret. "Zach Jardin... If I could start over, I would never fall in love with you again!"

Miraculously, Madelyn found herself reborn to the time when she was eighteen. Fueled by the desire to avoid repeating the same mistakes, she made a solemn vow to distance herself from everything related to Zach. But fate seemed determined to test her resolve. Just as she sought to escape the shadows of her past, the same man, Zach, emerged with an intimidating aura, gradually approaching her step by step. His voice, reminiscent of a devil's melody, echoed through the hallway as he declared, "Madelyn, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life..."

Chapter 1 On February 14th, Valentine's Day, Madelyn Jent, a 31-year-old woman, lost her battle to cancer. Inside a room in SereneCare Hospital in Ventropolis, the air was filled with a strong scent of disinfectant. [Zach, the doctor inserted a painful dialysis needle in me today.] [I'm on the verge of death. Could you spare a moment to visit me?] [Please, Zach...] Madelyn weakly turned her head and glanced at the text messages on her phone. Despite sending multiple messages, she had received no response from Zach. IV drips were connected to her veins. Her face was pale, her eyes sunken, and her body emaciated. Cancer had ravaged her limbs, causing them to deteriorate. She was completely immobile, unable to perform even the simplest tasks unaided. The nurse assigned to care for her hadn't shown up for almost two weeks, citing that further treatment was unnecessary. Madelyn was sensitive to the pain, but in the advanced stage of her cancer, she had to suffer with it every day. The only thing that kept her going was her love for Zach. But now, her once overwhelming love for him had faded. She was left with nothing but a frail and ailing body. Madelyn switched off her phone and silently awaited the embrace of death. The pain had nearly blurred her consciousness. She reminisced about the eight years she had devoted to being Zach's faithful wife. But what had she gained in the end? One by one, those around her had abandoned her, leaving her alone and destitute. Madelyn couldn't help but think that Zach would perhaps feel the greatest relief upon her demise. With her gone, he no longer subjected to the sight of her face. He could finally satisfy his longing to bring Cecilia Samford home as his wife. Eight months ago, on Zach's birthday, Madelyn sat on the couch, anxiously waiting for his return. It was well past two o'clock in the morning, and the carefully prepared meal on the table had grown cold. Instead of Zach, it was his assistant who arrived, bearing a divorce agreement. The assistant delivered the news hesitantly, saying, "Madam, Mr. Jardin had no choice. The Jardin Corporation is a vast enterprise that requires an heir." Madelyn forced a pale smile. A few years ago, she had been pregnant, but an accident had tragically led to a stillborn child. Since then, she hadn't been able to conceive.
