Evelyn POV
It was blind panic and guilt that fuelled my fast legs as I raced to Beatrice’s and Donnie’s home. I pushed my body the hardest I have in a long time to get to her.
The entire way I prayed. Please Moon Goddess, please let her and the baby be okay. I can hear the screams of terror before I even make it to the front door. She was in agony, there was no chance of misunderstanding her cries.
I don’t wait, I slam the door open to find her at the bottom of the stairs with little Harry tearful next to her.
“What’s happened?” “Alpha help, she fell down the stairs. It was my fault.” Harry desperately asks for help as he clutches onto his mother’s hand.
“Noah!” I roar through the mind-link for him to hurry as blood starts to stain her skirt. I knew he was on his way but she was in a bad way.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” He responds back through the mind-link, panting. He was running at full speed, pushing himself just as I had done.
“It’s all my fault, it’s all my fault…” Harry keeps repeating as he rocks back and forth on the floor. I very gently lift Beatrice’s skirt up to see how much blood she has lost already. She screams again, as blood continues to trickle down her thighs, Beatrice holding her stomach for fear of losing the pregnancy.
“Alpha…” Her eyes speak of her fear and devastation. “Beatrice try to stay come.” I release some calming emotions through my alpha bond to her.
“Help me…” She whispers a quiet plea to me which hits me centre in my heart, like a well aimed arrow.
“The baby…” The horror in her eyes shakes my very soul.
“Sshh Beatrice, try and stay still.” “Beatrice?” Noah reaches out to her from behind me. By the time he was next to her he was already assessing her situation.
“What happened Harry?” Noah asks Harry as he presses on her stomach, trying to feel for the child within her.
“It’s my fault. I left a toy on the stairs and she fell down.” “Did you see how she fell? Did she land on her tummy?” Noah asks Harry who starts shaking his head.
“I don’t know, it happened so fast.”
“The baby?” Beatrice winces in pain as Noah pushes down on her pelvic bone. “I need to get her to the hospital. Evelyn, we need an ambulance.”
Through the mind-link to my pack members I command an ambulance to arrive immediately at Donnie’s and Beatrice’s home. Donnie’s absence hasn’t gone unnoticed and this turn of events will certainly concern members of the pack.
“Donnie…I need him.” Her cries are that of a mother and mate needing her partner to be with her.
I couldn’t forgive myself if Donnie wasn’t here to comfort her in her most hours of need. Another scream of pain sends shivers to my spine as Noah picks her up with a worry in his eyes. He is no longer waiting for the ambulance…time is of the essence.
Holding her carefully in his arms he starts running in the direction of the hospital, Harry and I running next to him. “Get a gurney ready at the entrance.” I command through the mind-link to the hospital staff.
We were there in minutes, the hospital staff waiting for us. Beatrice’s loud cries of panic starting to turn into silent sobs and I could tell she had already given up….already knowing the child’s fate. No, it can’t be. As a Mother I couldn’t let this happen.
“Noah, do what you can…”
“Where are you going?”
“He needs to be here…” Is all I say as I escort Harry into a waiting room and pull out my phone.
“Alpha?” He answers my call instantly.
“Donnie, something has happened…..I need you to come home.”
“Harry?”
“He’s fine…” I hear him groan as he finally opens up his mate bond with Beatrice since he left. The block coming back down. By the sounds of it, he is receiving every mixture of her emotions like constant punches, unwilling to stop.
“Donnie, she fell down the stairs. It’s not looking good. You need to come back, she needs you.”
“I’m not alone Alpha.” His subtle wording informs me that the rogue, who so desperately wants to remain anonymous, is in ear shot.
What do I want to do, bring him on to pack lands? Not particularly…damn it. That’s what I was going to have to do.
If I let him go now, there was a chance he would run straight back to Vicky. He said he wanted to start again, to break free…but I know what people say and what people actually do is how this world keeps having problems.
“I could transfer him over to the Red Stone trackers…” His suggestion is an odd one.
“They are close?”
“Oh yes, they haven’t stopped tracking me. Still going..”
Damn Reuben, I told him I had it handled. “No…bring him back here. Blind fold him. I’ll prepare for a house arrest. Hurry Donnie, Beatrice is in pain.”
It has been a couple of hours since I made the call to Donnie. I didn’t ask where he was but I had a feeling it would take him a few hours to return.
I had kept a close eye on Beatrice whilst Noah had her on observation. Noah managed to stop the bleeding and an ultrasound check showed the baby seemed to be fine, for now. But Beatrice had managed to break her pelvis bone and was resting. It will make delivering the baby more difficult and she’ll have to increase her bed rest until the baby is fully grown.
Harry was pale with worry, there was nothing I could do to comfort him. He carried a pack’s worth of guilt on his shoulders. The only person that could comfort him, surprisingly, was Elspeth.
When I returned home with him, it’s as if she already knew something bad had happened and was ready to comfort him. She held him on the sofa whilst they watched a film, like he did with her when Rex went missing. Rex just stared at the both of them with an unhappy glint in his eye. I’m not sure whether it was from Elspeth hogging Harry, or his protectiveness as her brother.
Cassandra had taken my place to sit with Beatrice whilst I prepared for our new unwanted guest and kept an eye on Harry. I had assigned a spare house and asked that my warriors placed hidden microphones and cameras in the house.
I felt uncomfortable spying on someone, perhaps Reuben was starting to rub off on me, but I needed to find out what I could. Nothing would happen in that house without me seeing or hearing it.
Alpha Pierce was currently double checking the boundaries with both mine and his men, making sure every inch was secure. He offered to wait until Donnie reached the pack gate and then would jump in the car to return then. I had told him who the rogue was and what he was guilty of.
That’s when I felt it, an unsettling feeling of a trespasser. We’ve had rogues around the pack boundaries and even on our land before, so I knew it would only take a few hours for the feeling to settle down.
When the cars arrived in the courtyard, I told the children to remain in the house and under no circumstances must they come outside.
He was blindfolded but he could still sense my presence, a rogue face to face with an alliance alpha. His knees did him a discredit as I could see them trying to buckle under my aura.
“Go to her Donnie, leave him with me. I command to Donnie through the mind -link. He needed to be with his mate immediately.
“Alpha Evelyn Bright, an honour to be in your presence again.” Does he think I’ve forgotten what happened the last time he was here? A growl rattles through my chest, perhaps I could remind him of what we owe him. I could feel my wolf scratching at the surface, wanting out.
He doesn’t say anything, he just places a calming hand on my shoulder, not letting the rogue hear what the flashbacks were doing to me.
“A lesser alpha would have decapitated you by now. You cross her, you answer to me!” Pierce’s threatening roar was defeating.
“You are under house arrest until I decide what to do with you. You are to be watched twenty-four hours and my men are under the command to attack and kill instantly should you put a foot out of line…do I make myself clear?”
“Yes alpha…I understand.”
I take a step closer to him, his rogue scent invading my nostrils. The sour smell burning on my senses.
“Won’t you tell me your name?” I want to know the name of the man that brought a swift terror to my pack all those years ago.
“If not I do have ways of making you.” I whisper into his ears, making myself as threatening as possible. This man carried out the orders to kill my parents and my pack members.
He’s been with a head warrior for too long, his wolf is struggling to stay strong in the presence of an alpha and my wolf is strong.
“I can’t, she’ll kill me.” He starts to tremble under my continued alpha command.
“Better me than her. I have a feeling she’d take her time. Take him away!” I growl to one of my men as they lead him away into the assigned house.
