Evelyn POV
Mother?
“Oh I thought……” My eyes turn from him as I can feel my forehead furrow with uncertainty. I could have sworn I saw another name at the time.
“You thought, what?” His tone isn’t aggressive, it’s soft and gentle, keen to clear up any misunderstanding on my part.
He takes a step towards me, gripping my chin with his index finger and thumb before kissing my lips gently as he keeps his eyes on mine the entire time. His eyes ensuring I understand. “I’m sorry if you thought that!” His head hangs low, annoyance with himself for a long time ago.
“I’ve not done right by you Evelyn and I need you to believe that from now on, everything I do is in the best interest of you and the children.”
I can’t respond my voice is caught in the back of my throat, my eyes flickering between his eyes and those addictive lips of his. I just want them to kiss me all over, to never stop.
“Come on, let’s go back to the pack. I can’t wear these for much longer….”
He holds my hand the entire drive, only breaking to change gear, but uses just the one hand for the most part. I can feel his body trying to lean closer into me, the hairs on his skin pointing towards me but he is fighting back, not wanting to scare me away.
Not when we have only just started to reconcile. He wants to mark me, I can feel it, I can sense it from his wolf. And my actions earlier in the woods will only have increased this deep need from within him. To claim what the moon goddess designed to be only his, to match perfectly to him.
With my other hand placed on top of his, I calm his needs by stroking my thumb on the back of his hand. Letting him know I’m not going anywhere, that I am willing to fight for him this time. She has wronged us both but the ever watchful moon has her own plain for those that have wronged others.
The moon is silent, keep a watch in the night…yet still seeing all during the day. We make it back to the Silver Moon pack and are greeted by Noah in the courtyard. His eyes watch me the entire time. Does he know…can he sense what I just did?
More than that, he seems pissed off with me. He crosses his arms over his chest giving me his silent disapproval of the rushing off stunt I pulled earlier.
“Don’t be hard on her Noah, we’ve just had our eyes opened wider.” Reuben says as he walks over to join me. He entwines his fingers into my hands and walks me to the alpha house, Noah following behind.
“I’ve just asked Nate to join us.” Reuben states is eyes returning to normal from his brief mind-link. “What’s going on…didn’t you find Donnie?” Noah can be forgiven for looking confused.
“Found him we did, and he wasn’t alone.” A low rumble emits from Reuben’s chest.
“Alphas?” Nate comes running into my office and shuts the door behind him as we all take a seat around my table. Noah and I take our usual seats and I can see at first that Reuben is unsure where to sit.
Where do I want him to sit, opposite me? No, that is too far away and we need to be a united front. I pull the chair next to me out and pat the seat for him to join me. His smile reaches his ocean blue eyes as he follows my request and places a hand on my thigh.
Both Noah and Nate are watching us both with surprise, that his hand is on my thigh. Noticing their stares, Reuben gives a warning growl reminding the betas that they are our support, not our judges.
We update them on everything. Well not everything. Mostly on how we found Donnie with the rogue. How the rogue told us everything without the realisation at first of who we are. What Vicky planned, what she did…and how he executed her monstrous plan.
Noah struggles more than Nate. His breathing becomes slow and controlled, through the nose and out through the mouth. He’s just as angry. He’s also been betrayed.
His securing the future of his mate bond, now that much more harder due to the affects of him helping to raise children that aren’t his. Her actions have ripples like the lake, ripples that may last a life time. My heart breaks for him just as much as it does for Reuben. Both males caught up in the web of lies.
“What do you both want to do next?” Nate responds first as he has taken in all of the information we have to offer at this stage. He needs to go back. He needs to secure his pack as their alpha.
“Reuben, you need to go back to the Red Stone pack.” I turn to him, he was very close to me that if we were alone I might just plant a kiss on those lips that were becoming my new favourite play item.
“I can’t leave you, it’s not safe.” His response was firm, powerful. If I was just his luna I would agree with him. But I am not, I am an Alpha with just as much power. I would secure my pack, an alpha can not neglect their first oath.
“This isn’t about us anymore. Don’t you see? She killed her own pack as their Luna. Someone entrusted to keep them safe. She broke the most sacred of bonds, not just the pack bond, but the mate bond.
If she can do that, what else can she do? She destroyed her mate, her pack…to be with you. This is no longer about the safety of the Silver Moon pack, this is also the safety of the Red Stone pack. You need to go home and secure your pack, especially with your also beta here. You need to think of them.”
Reuben POV
Evelyn’s lips are moving but her words seem a distance away. Her beauty greatens day by day. I don’t want to leave her, I wasn’t ready. I haven’t even marked her yet, we haven’t even told the Rex and Elspeth.
The woods were incredible, fuck I wanted more…I need more. I know now that I can’t leave, not until she is mine. My wolf will fight me to come straight back.
“Did you find anything on the financial firm that sent the picture to Evelyn?” I ask Nate whilst at the same time gripping Evelyn’s thigh slightly tighter. She has trust issues and someone was trying to control her actions. Using false information to get a rise out of her.
“Their system is well guarded but our men are the best, it will only be a matter of time before they can hack the system.”
“Financial firm?” Noah turns to Nate perplexed. “Yes, the picture that Evelyn received we have proven it is a fake…”
“What picture?” Noah asks, his head snapping back to Evelyn. I hear her breathing change, her heart beat quicken. She hadn’t told him.
“It doesn’t matter.” Evelyn calmly orders in the surface but I can sense her guilt from hiding something important from him.
“What picture? Show me?” Noah orders of Nate who obliges his new friend, passing his phone to Noah. I keep my eyes pinned on him constantly. He best not be under any delusions of using this against me.
“Are you sure it is a fake?”
“Of course it fucking is.” I growl, standing up and posturing myself towards him. The lesson from four years ago still burnt into my memory. I’m close to re-educating him right this moment.
“Noah…” Evelyn gains his attention before they both enter a mind-link conversation.
“Donnie said something about a shipping port….why would she have connection to a shipping port?” She calmly rejoins the conversation as if nothing just happened.
“Shipping?” I turn to her, double checking. “That’s what he said.” She shrugs her shoulders at me. A certain feeling of dread hits my gut. Alarm bells starting to sound off in my mind. I’m up and walking out of the office before I even know what I am doing.
“Reuben?” Evelyn calls after me as I enter the courtyard, pulling my phone from out of my pocket. I can imagine his smug face already, but this is about her and them. Keeping them safe and for that I need to swallow my pride.
“Hello?” I can hear his Hollywood grin in how he answers the phone to me. His delight in knowing I’m calling for help.
“Pierce!”
“Reuben, what a delight. What can I do for you?”
“I need to call in a favour….”
