Evelyn POV
“Fine.” I nod my approval to Donnie. “I expect you and Nate to work as a team?” I push my aura out onto Nate. If I wasn’t so desperate to have Rex back I wouldn’t let Donnie go into possible danger. His mate was pregnant and didn’t need added stress through their bond. As well as the danger of who had Rex, my mind worried that Nate would turn on Donnie.
“I’ll put some health packs together in case you both run into trouble.” Noah offers. “Really?” Reuben scoffs at Noah, not believing how much of a good man,he really was.
“With your permission to enter the medical centre?” He pushes his glasses up his nose, facing Reuben.
“Nate can escort you!”
They leave, Noah glancing nervously back at me before he leaves the office.
“I need to go back to my pack.” I sigh out, turning to look at my warriors still congregated in the courtyard, waiting for their orders.
“It’s best you stay here for when we receive news to act upon.” Reuben says matter of factly as he
leans on his desk, crossing his legs and arms as he watches my every movement.
“I have females that are due any day and will need Noah’s expertise.” I also had females from the alliance packs that were due any day, but Reuben didn’t need to know that.
“Then he can go, and you can stay.” He shrugs and I just roll my eyes at his unhelpful response.
“What, are you both incapable of being apart…” His arms are thrust into the air from frustration
“Reuben!” I scold at him for forgetting I am now his equal and have my own responsibilities.
“You don’t trust me?” He eyes me suspiciously.
“Should I?” I match his tone.
“If I wanted you dead Evelyn, I wouldn’t have rushed you to Pierce’s hospital.” He had a point.
“Rushed? So you were concerned?” I humour myself, my presence was getting under his skin.
“A dead alpha, with another alpha on another alphas lands, without permission…wouldn’t of looked good on me.” He confuses himself with his own phrase.
“Oh I forget you’re all about the image aren’t you.” I start to walk passed him my arms crossed in
annoyance.
Why does he always do that? Act like feelings were for the weak.
He gently pulls at my elbow before standing up fully, his frame engulfing mine. I gasp slightly from the tingles that erupt on my elbow.
“I was concerned….” His gentle tones are that of his wolf’s, his eyes turning a stormy blue but are soon shook out back to that of glistening sea blue.
“I need my pack protected, my visit wasn’t even meant to be overnight. My pack is in vulnerable. position without me there.” I make sure to breathe through my mouth, limiting the intake of his scent into my senses as much as possible.
“Stay, I would like to get to know my daughter. We can act instantly on news rather than wait to get information to one another. Noah is your beta, he can defend the pack…”
“Noah will stay here.” I adamantly reply, he needs to bond with Cassandra.
“Then let me send some of my warriors to your pack. To put your mind at ease whilst you are here.”
“Why would you do that?” My eyebrows furrow, confused at his change in approach.
“Like I keep saying sweetheart, I’m not the monster you think I am!”
“Reuben….I…” What exactly did I want to say?
“This looks cozy!” Vicky’s high pitched voice enters the office, sneering at our closeness.
“Are you leaving? Your warriors are preparing to leave…”
“No she’s staying.” Reuben answers for me.
“I’I stay in a pack house with my warriors, Elspeth and I wouldn’t want to get in the way.”
“Nonsense!”
“Well actually I was hoping for a romantic movie night tonight Reuben?” Her whiny voice only adds to her pout. His eyes are on her now, so I slip out of the office to see just how much Elspeth has destroyed the kitchen. 1
It was now 11pm, Donnie and Nate had left two hours ago to take advantage of the cover of darkness. I was given private time in Reuben’s office to check pack emails, I also needed to contact the Silver Moon pack alliance alphas to inform them to keep their alert levels high in my
extended absence.
I declined Reuben’s offer to send Red Stone warriors to my lands, a cheetah never changes spots, and I just couldn’t forget the memories that still haunted me.
I decided to send fifteen of my warriors back, leaving me with five, Noah and Miss Smith. He didn’t exactly say it gently but he was right, if he wanted me dead he would have left me in the
warehouse.
Elspeth went to sleep at 8pm, I asked Miss Smith to tuck her in and then I would be up shortly. That has extended quite some bit but as I shut down the laptop and rubbed my eyes, I heard slight giggling coming from the kitchen. Over the power noise of the laptop it would be missed but I
could now hear it.
Walking to the kitchen, I poked my head around the corner expecting to say good night to Michelle and Cassandra when instead I found the oddest of scenes. Reuben sitting at the kitchen table on his laptop and a giggling Elspeth sitting next to him, cake crumbs everywhere.
“Stay calm, he’s not hurting her….he’s entitled to get to know his own daughter.” My wolf calmly states, trying to prevent me from starting a new argument.
“What’s all this young lady?” I enter the kitchen with an amused smile on my face.
“Sorry Mummy I was hungry.” She giggles, placing her hand over her mouth.
I walk into the kitchen more and grab a glass out of the cabinet. Entering the fridge for milk, I pour her a small glass pretending I can’t hear their whispering.
I sit at the kitchen table opposite them both and place the glass of milk in front of her.
Reuben has a softer side to him when talking to Elspeth, a side I haven’t never seen before.
“What are you both whispering about?” I ask, intrigued by their topic of conversation.
“I was telling Alpha Reuben about the time Rex threw a stone at your office window.”
I smile at the memory, he flat out denied it was him…he still does to this day.
“So it was him?” I smirk in amusement from her finally confirming what I already knew.
“It was an accident Mummy.” She pleads having slammed her hand over her mouth, horrified at herself før spilling his secret.
“Can I tell you a secret…” I lean in to them both.
“What Mummy?” She takes her hand away from her mouth listening intently to what I was about to say.
“A mother always knows!” I smile, before my heart pangs from my missing him. It’s a constant pulling at my soul that still overwhelms me when I stop keeping myself busy.
We both look at each other, I frown as her bottom lip starts to quiver.
“I’ll get him back, I promise!” I reach my hand for hers and squeeze it tightly. Their twin bond was unique and fear took over me that she was now starting to worry.
“Is he okay?” I ask, not missing the slight odd expression Reuben gives me.
“He’s tired and alone Mummy.” She starts to sob into her giant bunny teddy as she leans onto Reuben’s arm. He lifts his arm up, at first I think because he is uncomfortable having her so close, but he surprises me when he places his arm around her and offers her a comforting embrace.
“We will get him back, don’t worry. Any day now!”
Rex POV
Something seems to have changed. The men keeping me are moving more this evening than they have on the other evenings.
I miss Mummy and Elspeth…even Uncle Noah. It’s cold in this old metal unit. I have a small bed in the corner and a few basic wooden toys but that was all.
If I needed the toilet I had to ask for an escort but I didn’t like going in the night. They were tired. and they would growl at me if I took too long or tripped over on my way back to the unit.
It was dark, maybe not for them because they had their wolf’s night vision but I didn’t have that
yet.
Although a very faint voice kept entering my mind especially at night and I just knew it was my wolf letting me know I wasn’t alone. That Mum would come and rescue me.
I was trying to stay brave for Mum, but sometimes the noises in the night might be frightening. and I struggled to sleep until dawn broke. It helped to hear the birds rather than the hooting of the owls. But I was the son of an alpha, I would be the most feared creature when of age and then the night animals would be scared of me. I had to remember that!
I felt guilty for wanting to go to the cinema, for being bossy tó Mum. I should have waited but then she might be here with me or worse, killed like the warriors in the car.
I can hear talking outside when the door is unlocked and opened. A skinny man enters along with a small fat one. They weren’t part of a pack, they couldn’t mind–link one another like Mum and Uncle Noah can.
Which means I hear most of their conversations but pretend not to take interest.
“Come on young master, we are moving locations.” The tall skinny man walks over to grab the wooden toys whereas the fat male, looks as if this change in plan was a huge inconvenience to him. He picks up my bed and starts to work out of the metal unit before turning to sneer at me.
“Where are we going?” I ask the kinder male of the two.
“We are going on a little adventure…” He tries to make it sound like a fairy tale. His target audience was Elspeth, not me.
“I’m four, not a silly little girl.” I scoff, were they worried they were going to be found. Was Mum close?
“Ha, he’s an alpha’s son alright.” The fat male huffs from outside as he seems to be putting the bed in the back of a van.
I certainly was! One thing they have failed to realise is that not one of them has worn masks of tried to hide their voices. I haven’t been blindfolded once. I would remember their faces and voice’s for years to come, which meant one day, as the Alpha male of the Silver Moon pack, I would get my revenge.
