Evelyn POV
Candice has been talking at me for about half an hour. But my pregnant eyes can’t keep themselves away from the food table.
Look at all that food. Look at all those deserts.
I haven’t had much of an appetite being so full lately, but I might be able to push myself to try as many desserts as I can.
I excuse myself and move my way over to the food table, grabbing a plate to pile up high. This was a wonderful baby shower party. It was decorated with blue and white balloons, and feathered filled boxes confirming that we were having a boy.
It was confirmed in our last scan.
We were going to wait but I never thought I would be pregnant again so I didn’t keep most of the the baby clothes from last time, meaning I had to buy new ones. I wanted to be as prepared as possible to enjoy the first few weeks of our family bonding together.
As soon as my plate is piled up high with sweet desserts I walk over to the small bar to order a drink.
That’s when I see him… Pierce, standing against the bar almost lost in thought.
“Pierce?” I walk over to him, snapping him out of his day dream, his face forming into a smile. A smile that failed to reach his eyes, which wasn’t like him at all. Pierce was always a happy man, always beaming.
“Evelyn, you look radiant.”
“I’m very pregnant Piece, radiant doesn’t quite fit. But I’ll take it and thank you any way.” I tease placing a kiss on his cheek.
“How are you?”
“I’m good, I’ve been busy with pack bits .sorting out some new ventures…” His voice trails off at the end, not believing his own words.
He was saying it but he didn’t mean it. He wasn’t doing well and I felt bad having not checked in on him more.
“You forget I’ve lived apart from a mate, a mate that I actually rejected. I’m so sorry Pierce I’ve been a bad friend….” It hadn’t even occurred to me what he might have been feeling until this very moment. I rejected Reuben back then but I could still feel my wolf calling out to him, pining.
“You’ve been pregnant and building a new house…”
“That’s no excuse, I just assumed….”
“What?”
“I don’t know, how do you move on when half your soul is in hiding.” I can’t say that he would have moved on because most werewolves can’t.
A mate bond is hard to fight against. Rejected or not.
Even Reuben struggled more than he let on. His relationship with Vicky at the time wasn’t how it was before me. He even believed I was dead, yet he knew deep down something wasn’t over between us. Even if he didn’t know it.
Sometimes you just can’t fight what is already preordained.
“Time is a great healer Evelyn, I’m sure whatever the moon goddess has installed for me will be a worthwhile journey.” This time his smile does reach his eyes, his Hollywood smile beaming onto his face.
He was such a good man, I hope the moon goddess….
“Ouch..” A pain within me stops my thoughts in my tracks.
“Are you okay?”
“Pierce…” Reuben appears swiftly from the other side of the marquee as Pierce’s hands touch my round firm pregnant belly.
“It’s fine Reuben… The baby just moved …” Another movement cuts me off from talking this time, the baby was kicking out at my ribs, the sensation making me feel slightly nauseous.
Pierce had naturally touched my stomach out of concern forgetting that touching another male’s pregnant female was a big no no in our community.
Reuben’s hormones were super charged in preparation for the arrival of this baby, readying to defend me and his pup as I am currently at my weakest.
I loud gasp escapes me as something gushes from under me, and it is only when I look down that I see Pierce’s tanned suede loafers now covered in my waters.
