Reuben POV
I found leaving Evelyn in the hospital hard, but she was determined for us to not sit back. We needed to push forward, we needed to end this threat to our family and packs once and for all. Utilise this time to find weaknesses in their network. We had a feeling that Father didn’t know of Vicky’s attack. That they had broken their alliance. Classic trait of Father, getting too greedy and not tidying up his lose ends.
Knowing now that a new life was growing inside of her, I can’t believe how fucking stupid I was at leaving her at the Lake House and also that Pierce left them.
This baby would have me from day one, I wouldn’t let him or her down like I did Rex and Elspeth in the beginning. This baby was my chance at redemption.
I only finally left the hospital when Evelyn fell back asleep and Noah assured me that he would stay with her. That he would make sure she was given an infusion of vitamins to help with the her recovery and the demands of the baby.
I was holding a scan picture in my hand as I walked back to the Silver Moon’s alpha house. This baby was already perfect, and I would do everything within my power to keep my family safe. I wasn’t a naturally smiley person but I was struggling to hide the huge grin that wanted to remain on my face since I heard the news. I had only been living off of pure anger since the attack.
I hadn’t seen Pierce since we returned to the main pack lands. There was a burning rage within me that he left my mate and children to defend for themselves. Even when he promised me he would stay and guard them with his life.
My anger was so intense until Evelyn woke up that it was better for our friendship that I didn’t see him.
Walking into the house, I place the scan picture in my back trouser pocket.
Evelyn had asked that I wait to tell the children, wait until we are there together and of course I wouldn’t take that away from her. I wanted to check on the children but also liaise with my IT department back at the Red Stone pack to double their efforts in tracking down my Father. There was only so many rocks he could hide under.
I walk into the front room to find Rex watching the television and Elspeth asleep on the sofa, frustratingly with Harry asleep next to her. I move forward wanting to pick her up and put her in her bed when Rex stops me.
“Leave them Dad. She’s only just gone to sleep when Harry arrived.” He has the nerve to tut at me and I can only see the back of his head but I’m certain he would have rolled his yes. Kids today!
“I don’t think so, not on my watch…”
“Well, they are on my watch and he hasn’t slept at all since he found out what happened to us. Just leave them be. I’ll stay.”
“I’m sorry, are you telling me what to do?”
“No, just advising…” He turns at the most opportune moment with a smirk on his face.
I can’t help but chuckle at his response, knowing full well he would always have his sister’s best interest at heart. And this new baby, that Rex would be the great big brother to this little one that he is to Elspeth. What if it’s a girl? Oh goddess, can I cope with two daughters to keep safe and keeping fending off the boys.
Leaving Rex to his film, I head into my office keen to call my pack. Rex had been doing well since I started training him, it helped to train him with Liberty as well. Although, now he’ll be training alone.
Opening the door I find Pierce sitting on Evelyn’s round meeting table, his head in his hands…the table covered in maps and pictures. He was a ghost of himself. It was obvious that he hadn’t slept or eaten since we returned.
