Pierce POV
“Reuben, you can’t do that…it’s not Silver Moon or Red Stone land. You can’t just barge through…”
What had I arrived to? I received a call from Nate, not telling me anything but telling me to come to the Red Stone pack as soon as possible.
At first I was expecting some kind of surprise party from all the secrecy around my arrival but when I got here it was clear, there was no party whatsoever. I’ve never seen Reuben like this, he hadn’t slept and was refusing to eat.
When I got here, it seemed that both the alliances had been alerted to some sort of potential threat, I never dreamed it would be as severe as this.
When I walked into Reuben’s office, I found him exhausted. His head was in his hands as he analysed maps and photos. It didn’t dawn on me until I saw the pictures of the Bright family on the walls, that I started to get an idea of what had gone down.
“I don’t fucking care. If there’s a chance they are on that land…”
“Let me talk to the alpha, he’s a contact. Let me get his approval. You don’t want to start another battle when you are already planning against a war.” I try to make him see sense.
“We haven’t the time…”
“I’ll be quick…” I walk out of his office, Nate following me and gesturing me to the kitchen to make my call.
“Nate, what the actual fuck has happened?” I had got an overall idea of what had happened but how had it happened?
“Alpha Odin returned whilst Reuben was at the Blue Moon pack. Evelyn followed him back but Reuben sent her away. Odin has made a claim to take the pack back…saying their union goes against his role as the head of the Red- Stone alliance.”
“But they were already married…”
“That was Evelyn’s argument but you know Odin…”
“Okay, fill me in quickly on the rest.” I demand wanting to ensure I was as up to date with news so that I can help support my man Reuben.
We were struggling to find leads, and a big question still circled around who this undetectable person was that had links to Odin.
“Alpha?” Everybody’s eyes turn to Donnie’s lad Harry as he approaches Reuben, who wasn’t at his most patient right now.
“Can I hold bunny please? I promise to take good care of him…” Harry looks to the bunny teddy, whose owner was missing.
I see Donnie take a step towards his son, most likely worried he has stepped out of line. Reuben looks to the teddy that has remained in his hand’s since I arrived and I have a feeling since he rescued it. It was battered and needed a good turn in the washing machine but nothing a bit of TLC can’t cure.
With a deep breath in, he passes the teddy to Harry… ruffling the lad’s dark brown hair at the same time.
“She’ll be glad you’re looking after him.” He smiles sadly at Harry, a smile of a broken man.
“Alpha…” His head IT guys walks in, someone who I’m pretty sure has been responsible for hacking some of my security systems in the past.
“Alpha…we have a lead.”
“What…where?”
“Not far from the crash site…a video door bell has confirmed the suspected vehicles.”
I had watched the CCTV myself of the attack, of the warrior car exploding and Evelyn’s car being pushed off the road. The gasps that filled the room when the footage showed the car flipping repeatedly until it stopped broke my heart.
Michelle had to leave the room with Candice, her sobs echoed along the hallway outside until they were out of ear shot.
Reuben’s wolf shifted when their lifeless bodies were removed from the car. The footage didn’t let us zoom in too much but you could see Evelyn was covered in blood, she seemed to take the main brunt from the impact.
His wolf had us all on edge, the aura radiating off him was something I had never experienced before. He was truly a king wolf.
When Nate paused the video to show Rex was awake it added a new fuel to our determination to get them back safe and sound.
“Pierce, I’m taking the first car, can. you arrange with Milo and the others to stand back half a mile as back up.”
His delegating, even in such a concerning experience, touched my soul. He trusted me. “Of course Reuben.” I nod to him in understanding.
“I’m coming too…” Little Harry piped up, bold as brass this kid is.
“Absolutely not…”
“Dad, I’ve been helping all this time, you can’t expect me to not come. Harry protests but Reuben cuts them both off quickly.
“Bring him!”
“But Alpha…”
“I won’t let anything happen to him, you have my word.” Reuben promises, a different man to only a few weeks ago. Someone who has finally embraced the truth that he deserves happiness, deserves to be loved. I still just can’t believe the bugger’s luck that he gets to call Evelyn his own.
Reuben POV
Too much time had passed. I saw the blood on the broken car window, the head wound in the cctv footage. It was now a race against time.
The cars that picked them up had disappeared shortly after going out of CCTV range. That’s what was plaguing us, we couldn’t find them at all.
But they had now been spotted on a human home’s door bell video camera, my men really were the best. It would never occur to me to hack those. They must have looked through thousands in the space of a few hours.
Word had gotten out from Donnie informing the Silver Moon alliance, resulting in Candice, and Milo, arriving with their warriors ready to help. I was indebted to them, and to Pierce who I hadn’t called but he found out nonetheless.
Nate informed the Red Stone alliance, somehow saying it meant the possibility of this being all real.
We were all prepared for whatever battle came our way. Alphas were always under attack but Evelyn was clearly well liked and the packs struggled with the alpha twins being included in some sinister plan for power.
“It’s going to be okay man, they are going to be fine..I’m certain of it.” Pierce slaps my shoulder through the open car window as the second group of warriors hold back as arranged.
“You know the plan…”
“Reuben, please. I’m an alpha that’s managed to stay out of the clutches of the Red Stone alliance…I know my shit.” He smiles, showing his teeth but the smile is forced, he is concerned just as we all are.
“Keep the boy here…” He whispers under his breath, gesturing his head to Harry in the back seat.
“No, I made a promise to him. I’ll look out for him. I’ll keep him hidden.”
“Alright, good luck….” He puts his hand out to me to shake.
“Thanks Pierce…” I shake it, a peaceful truce settling between the two of us. Nate doesn’t hang around, as soon as Pierce removes his hand, the car pulls away, the tyres screeching.
We find the cars sitting outside a shipping container, one similar to the one Rex had been held in. We were on the wrong side, the access on the opposite side to us which meant we would have to spend longer watching from the shadows than I wanted.
It was now late morning, and the sun was fighting against us for cover. The cars we parked in a local human housing estate and came back on foot. We were lurking in the surrounding bushes, up high in the well covered tree tops and even under plant machinery that seemed to have been abandoned. Donnie was next to me, as was Harry who had brought bunny with him.
He kept his word, he was looking after it for her. We were hiding behind an over grown bramble which acted as a good cover. Donnie was acting as my communication link to the Silver Moon warriors.
We were ready but what we didn’t know was what we were ready for. We had our armour, our weapons including our swords with the royal emblem engraved into them. We were ready.
“Look, there’s movement…” Harry points at the container ahead, my head snapping to follow his finger. He was right, something was happening.
“Hold!” I command through the mind- link and repeat the same command to Donnie to share.
“Get your guns ready…” I whisper to Donnie beside me, who pulls his gun out and points it at the movement ahead. That’s when my world stops.
A gun shot is heard from within the container, followed by a scream. The movement up ahead quickens and Donnie gets ready to fire.
“It’s Elspeth…” Harry yells at Donnie, pushing his Father’s raised gun out of the firing line of Elspeth. She starts running but trips and falls, her hands cuffed together which hasn’t helped her balance.
I don’t wait, I’m not an alpha in this moment commanding two alliances of warriors. I’m a father that needs to get his little girl to safety. I push from off the ground, my legs running with a strength and speed that I was born to run at.
Another gun shot sounds and it causes even more terror to form upon her face. She looks lost, stopping and turning to go back inside.
“Elspeth!” I roar.
“Daddy!” She screams for me, running towards me, running safely into my arms.
