79. Being The Envy of Every Girl
That Evening. Standing tall and mighty in the center of Phoenix City, GK Group’s First Hotel was illuminated with bright lights.
As many cars streamed inside the hotel, one of the event halls was bustling with laughter and chatter of people.
Many socialites were present, some of them mingling with each other, while some of them congratulated the couple.
A group of young girls surrounded Tracy, showering her with compliments.
“I must say you’re the luckiest girl in this city at the moment. Very soon, after this engagement, you will become Mrs. Harrison, every girl’s dream.”
“You are one step away from becoming a top socialite lady. As soon as Lucas Harrison marries you, aren’t you above us all, Tracy?”
“How does it feel to be admired and envied by every girl in the socialites’ circle? Only someone like you can surely catch Lucas Harrison’s eyes.”
“Girls, you think too highly of me.” Holding a red wine glass, Tracy covered her lips, laughing softly. “Of course, I’m lucky that Lucas Harrison only has eyes for me. It’s not because of something special that I possess, it’s because true love doesn’t consider status or class.”
“Ha! How I wish I could find such kind of true love.”
“And if only that true love could be Lucas Harrison.”
“I’m sure you’ll find your true love. You only have to pray harder to get someone as great as Lucas.”
Tracy walked away, oblivious to the ladies’ sneers and secret glares. The moment she left, they gathered in one place and began whispering.
“And to think that she traveled abroad for three years. Lucas Harrison must love her deeply to have waited for her.”
“Rumor has it that Lucas Harrison had a wife, but they separated not long ago. Isn’t it because of Tracy’s return?”
“Tracy might be the luckiest girl in this city, but I don’t think her heart is pure. Doesn’t she seem pretentious to you?”
“I know, right? But what can we say? Sigh! She will be, after all, above us from now on.”
At another corner of the hall, Blake Harrison and Stella were chatting with some friends. Tracy approached them, and Blake’s eyes shone with approval.
“You are handling the crowd well, daughter-in-law.”
“Everyone wants to speak with me. They won’t even allow me to be alone with Lucas.” Tracy lowered her head shyly, greatly touched by how Blake addressed her.
“People are bound to love her, Honey. Very soon, Tracy will officially be a member of the Harrisons Household.” Stella put on a smile. “By the way, why does it seem like Lucas isn’t in a good mood?”
Their eyes traveled to where Lucas stood, chatting with a middle-aged man.
He appeared stiff and distracted.
Tracy put on a sad look and answered, ” It must be because of Grandpa’s illness. How unfortunate. Grandpa isn’t here to witness this happy event.”
“Yeah! That is very sad,” Stella lamented in a dramatic tone.
She pulled Tracy aside, putting some distance from Blake who had resumed chatting with a friend.
“I think that old man’s sudden illness is auspicious to us. The heavens must be working in our favor,” Stella whispered.
“I also think so,” Tracy snickered. ” Otherwise, who knows what the old man might do?”
“Once you exchange the engagement rings with Lucas, he will no longer have any power to disapprove of you. That filthy girl will be out of Lucas’s life for good, and we won’t delay your wedding.”
Stella was still speaking when Lucas approached them.
Tracy quickly put back her facade, giving him a sweet smile.
“If we keep waiting for all the guests to arrive, I’m afraid we’ll spend the whole night here without proceeding with the engagement. Don’t you think it is time to exchange the rings, Honey?”
“Well, Tracy…” Lucas’s discomfort was evident.
Tracy listened to him patiently. “Is there something you want to say? Are you still worried about Grandpa?”
Lucas didn’t answer, looking as if he’d rather be somewhere else.
Tracy softened her eyes, holding his arm gently. “Remember Grandpa wants this engagement. Worrying will only waste our time. Why don’t we go to the stage and exchange the rings?”
“Are you sure this engagement is Grandpa’s order?”
Lucas had never planned for an engagement, deeming it unnecessary. He’d rather have a low-key wedding celebration instead.
Most of the guests gossiped about nothing but his recent divorce, and it wasn’t settling well with him, especially when they kept mentioning Heidi.
Tracy was a bit taken aback by his question. “Don’t you believe me? Of course, Grandpa ordered it. Who else has that power apart from Grandpa Winston?”
“Alright, let’s go.” Still, he looked hesitant.
Tracy held his hand, her heart pounding in anticipation as they walked towards the stage. Then suddenly, the large doors opened with a bang.
Lucas was the first to turn around.
Seeing the person at the door, he looked as if he’d seen a ghost. ” Grandpa?”
