131. Her Achilles Heel
Heidi’s lips pulled into a smile, grateful at Grandpa Winston’s kind tone. If only Lucas Harrison was half as kind as his grandfather.
“Your grandfather and I have been great businessmen allies, Heidi. Your grandmother is very kind and honest. Now I know where you got those good qualities from.”
“Heidi, will you come visit me soon?” Grandpa Winston asked hopefully. “It has been almost a month now since you last visited. You also left very early in the morning without saying goodbye.”
“Grandpa, as long as Lucas won’t be there, I’ll come.”
Heidi made herself clear, not wanting what happened the last time to repeat itself.
Grandpa Winston sounded mad. “Did that boy break your heart again, Heidi?”
“It’s nothing, Grandpa. I’ll see you soon.”
She just didn’t want to see Lucas. Lucas turned out to be her only Achilles heel. Another encounter with the man could potentially crush the rest of her dignity.
While making the phone call, Isla had excused herself from the office, sensing Heidi was busy.
After the call ended, Heidi left her chair and stood by the large floor-to-ceiling window, staring down at the bustling city traffic below.
She lost track of time, standing there, lost in her own thoughts.
When the office door opened and someone walked in, Heidi didn’t move as if oblivious.
“What’s occupying your thoughts?” Steve approached, holding a huge flower bouquet.
“What are they for?” Heidi asked as he extended the flowers to her.
“Roses. You know what they mean, Heidi.” Steve put the flowers in her hand, smiling. “Sorry for coming unannounced. While driving, I came across a flower shop, saw these roses, and thought about you.”
Heidi smelled the refreshing scent of the flowers, putting on her best smile in appreciation.
Then her mind wired back to a particular time in high school.
Inside the school’s garden, she snuck several daisies into her backpack. The gardener snatched it, bullied her, and a boy snatched it back to her and scolded the gardener.
He didn’t know, but those daisies were meant for him.
Heidi was happy nonetheless, because the daisies ended up as a gift from him or so she thought.
Because that boy probably didn’t recognize her. Her face was all covered in mud.
“What are you thinking?” Steve snapped his fingers in front of her.
Heidi gasped, shaking her head. “N- Nothing.”
When she tried to smell the flowers this time, the scent wasn’t enticing anymore, and her stomach churned strangely.
Heidi shoved down the nausea, trying her best to act normal.
Steve left shortly, and she felt sick, maybe from thinking too much or from the scent of the roses that filled up the whole office.
Heidi ended up throwing up in a corner in the parking lot.
“Young Miss, you look sick. Are you alright?” The Driver asked her once she entered the car.
“I’m fine, thank you,” Heidi replied tiredly. “Can you please take me to the Harrisons Mansion?”
John looked conflicted as he shook his head. “Young Miss, I’m sorry, but the Old Master warned me never to take you to that place again. Not only that, he doesn’t want you to roam in the city now that many people know who you are.”
“Grandpa’s orders?” Heidi murmured.
“Yeah. He gave me strict instructions, Young Miss.”
Heidi rubbed her forehead and ordered the driver to take her home instead.
She could go and see Grandpa Winston another day.
She felt so much fatigue even without doing much work in the office today, and she didn’t have the strength to argue with the driver.
Heidi was already yawning when she arrived home.
The dinner hadn’t been prepared yet, and she was starving.
“Young Miss, you came back early.” One of the maids greeted her. “Did you have a good time at work?”
Heidi nodded tiredly.
She went to her room, sat down, and brought out her phone.
Staring at a particular blocked contact, a knock suddenly came from the door before someone entered.
“How may I help you?” Heidi looked up to find Natalie standing in front of her.
Natalie’s hands were folded and her lips were pursed. “Heidi, we need to talk.”
